2019 seems to be the year commencing the era of the foldable
smartphones. This highly anticipated technology is finally entering into
production with various manufacturers showcasing their products incorporating
their very own patented technologies, which is great news.
With Samsung just announcing their Galaxy Fold Smartphone
which really was a head turner, it didn’t take much time for Huawei to launch
their first foldable smartphone in their very own exclusive launch event, the -
Huawei Mate X. The Huawei Mate X seems like a really enticing device with a lot
to offer, let’s take a look.
First of all the Huawei Mate X look great to look at and unlike
the Samsung Galaxy Fold which has two screens – a smaller one on the outside
and a larger one on the inside, the Mate X has one and only one large screen
which when folded doubles up as the two smaller screen with one on either sides
(front & back) of the smartphone.
When opened up the Mate X has 8 inch OLED display with a
resolution of 2480 x 2200 which is comparatively larger than the Samsung Galaxy
Fold’s 7.3 inch display. The 8 inch screen is almost a square with an aspect
ratio of about 8:7.1 which is kind of unusual but it will be really interesting
to see how Huawei works its software around this display.
When folded, the
front of the device has a relatively large 6.6 inch display with a resolution
of 2480 x 1148 with very little bezels which helps it keep up with today’s
standard smartphone standards although it is a foldable smartphone. The back of
the smartphone has a 6.3 inch display with a resolution of 2480 x892 which
proves to be helpful for various purposes such as screen mirroring and taking
selfies using the back camera which is great.
The device has something called a Falcon hinge fold
mechanism which helps it fold really flat. The device stands at 11mm when folded
and is a mere 5.4mm when not folded which makes it thinner than even the IPad
Pro which is really quite a feat.
The smartphone has a Kirin 980 chipset along with the Balong
5000 modem which helps bring 5G to the smartphone both of which are
manufactured on the 7nm manufacturing technology which makes it really
efficient and this is as good as it can get. The device is said to sport quad
5G antenna’s which allows for download speed’s of upto 4.6 gb/ps which is 10
times as fast as 4G. Although 5G is not very prevalent at the moment it will
help future proof the smartphone. The back of the device sports a Leica triple
camera setup which like the previous Huawei triple camera setup’s are a combination
of a normal lens, a telephoto lens and an ultra-wide lens.
For security purposes Huawei has a fingerprint scanner to its
side incorporated on its power button. The device also has a USB Type C for charging
and data transfer purposes but unfortunately seems to miss out on the 3.5mm
headphone jack which is quite the trend at the moment.
As for the battery, the smartphone has a 4500mah battery but
we’ll have to wait for the smartphone to come out to actually know how the
battery stacks up for every-day usage. The device will also come with a 55 watt
charger that can charge up the device to 85% in just 30 minutes which is great
especially for such a high battery capacity.
That covers up pretty much everything we know about the
device at the moment .The device is priced at $2600 for the 512 GB variant with
8 gigs of RAM and is said to come out by the second half of 2019.
What are your thoughts on the Huawei Mate X ? how would you
compare it to the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Fold? Let me know in the comments
