HOW TO - Use your TP-Link Router as an Extender | Step-> by -> Step easy way!!

Have your old TP-Link router or any other router lying around and you seem to find no use of it well fret not because your currently old useless router can be made useful yet again as an extender to extend your current Wi-Fi network thus extending it's range further more.

Here is a step by step easy tutorial that helps you set up your old TP-link router as an extender without using any cables. Read on to find out.

Step 1:
Take your old TP-Link router and connect it to a power source.

Step 2:
Reset the router either by long pressing the reset button behind the router for about 5 seconds or by inserting a pin inside the reset slot behind the router depending on the type of router you have

Step 3:
Take your smartphone, turn on the wi-fi and connect to the router using the password written under the router.

Step 4:
Open any web browser in your smartphone and type in the IP address of your router. In case of  TP-Link the address is  192.168.0.1. This should open a login window which asks for the username and password. By default the username and password are both admin. Enter this and hit login.

Step 5:
Once logged in go ahead and click on Network from the left side of the screen and once inside the Network menu click on the LAN sub-menu and in here change the IP address to 192.168.0.2 from what it already is and save this .This page will now request you to reboot the router click to reboot.
While going on with the process make sure you are connected to your old wi-fi router you wish to use as an extender.

Step 6:

  • After the router has completed rebooting enter the username and password again (i.e admin) if it asks for it.
  • Now go to the Wireless menu on the left side of the page and Wireless settings sub-menu and from here enable WDS Bridging by clicking on the box nearby.
  • This should open up a new set of attributes under which you will find a survey button click on it. Identify your current router and note the channel number and click on connect. Now select your encryption type which will mostly be WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK and enter your current router's password.
  • After this click on channels under Wireless Settings and change it from auto to the number you just noted from the survey page.
  • Reboot the router once again by clicking in the prompt

Step 7:
For the last and final step make sure you are connected to you old router and login again and click on DHCP menu on the left side of the page and click on disable. Restart the router for one last time by clicking on the prompt.

That's all you now have you old router set up as your new extender. You can change the Wi-Fi password if you want under the Wireless menu on the Wireless Security sub-menu.
